Die Top Old Boys von Superpunk haben haben sie jüngst treffend besungen, der Fotograf Horst Friedrichs porträtiert sie in seinem Fotobildband I’m One – 21st Century Mods so stilsicher, wie es sich eben für Mods gehört.

Im Zeit-Fotoblog spricht Horst Friedrichs (untermalt von Bildern aus seinem Fotoband) über seine Arbeit am Bildband,  Mode und Stil in Großbritannien, alte und junge Mods und ihre großen und kleinen Selbstinszenierungen.

True Knowledge And Understanding Makes For A Happy Home

Freunde, Weihnachten steht noch vor der Tür, aber ich habe schon das Geschenk des Jahres abgeräumt:  Mein ol’ Florentine Flattie J. beglückte mich sehr nachträglich zu meinem Geburtstag mit der DVD The Joy Of Sex Education. Unter diesem Titel hat das British Film Institute (BFI) Aufklärungsfilme aus den Jahren 1917 bis 1973 zusammengestellt. Ich bin jetzt im Bilde.

Die Compilation startet mit den Sorgen und Nöten kanadischer Soldaten im 1. Weltkrieg (Whatsoever a Man Soweth, 1917) und ihrem eigentlichen Haupttkampf gegen leichte Mädchen und deren evil Veneral Diseases wie Gonorrhoea und Syphillis. Ich bin beim Schauen bisher bis ins Jahr 1937 vorgedrungen und angenehm überrascht von der Vielfalt der Filme. Es werden ganze shakespearsche Dramen entwickelt (A Test for Love, 1937) oder filmisch äußerst anspruchsvolle Naturaufnahmen humorvoll zur Erläuterung der Materie herangezogen, ohne auch nur irgendwas zu erläutern (The Mystery of Marriage, 1932). Die Sammlung ist ganz  sicher ein riesiger Spaß – nicht nur für Anglophile, Filmfreaks und Kulturgeschichtler mit einem Sinn fürs abseitige Detail. Ganz nebenbei lernt man so manch lustiges Idiom – wie zum Beispiel „sowing one’s wild oats“. Sehr schön auch der Blick in Einrichtungsstile der 10er, 20er und 30er. Freue mich schon auf die kommenden Filme, dann insbesondere die 70er.

Abgerundet wird die liebevolle Zusammenstellung übrigens durch ein recht informatives Booklet mit zwei einführenden Essays und ergänzenden Hintergrundtexten zu jedem der Filme.

Beatles to Bowie. The 60s exposed

Für die Glücklichen unter Euch, die in absehbarer Zeit mal wieder London unsicher machen:

Vielleicht lohnt sich ein Abstecher in die National Portrait Gallery. Die präsentiert noch bis zum 24. Januar 2010 die Ausstellung Beatles to Bowie. The 60s exposed. Der Guardian kritisiert die sehr oberflächliche Sicht der Ausstellung auf die Dekade:

By offering every year of the 60s through the photographs of the chart toppers and the fan mags of the time, this exhibition limits itself to style. If that’s all the National Portrait Gallery requires, it will satisfy the nostalgia seekers and those who believe that, to its detriment, style was all there was to the period.

Gut möglich. Auch gut möglich, dass es schon Spaß genug ist, sich am Stil der 60s zu ergötzen.
